Gypsy Moth

The Canadian Forestry Service in 2002 mapped areas of moderate to severe defoliation totaling 16,800 hectares caused by the Gypsy Moth larvae in the South Central District which includes Bancroft, Midhurst, Parry Sound, Pembroke, and Peterborough Regions.  This was an increase from under 800 hectares in 2001.  In the Sudbury Region moderate to severe defoliation increased from 6,400 hectares in 2001 to 136,900 hectares in 2002.  Province wide, moderate-to-severe defoliation remains high exceeding 8,000,000 hectares in 2002.

Tent Caterpillar

Forest tent caterpillars damage by defoliation.  They prefer trembling aspen but readily attack plains cottonwood, balsam poplar, green ash, bur oak, and white birch in natural stands, parks, and urban centers.

Hemlock Looper

Hemlock Looper outbreaks develop and subside very suddenly. They spread quickly and can cause the death of balsam firs in the first year that damage is detected.
